匈牙利钢琴手Rezso Seress 与其女友的爱情破裂后，在1933年写下一首充满哀愁的歌曲，名为Szomoru Vasarnap.英文歌名是Gloomy Sunday.中文歌名普遍叫黑色星期天，gloomy一般作忧郁，沮丧，翻译做黑色不太妥当（作郁闷解还好些）。当时出版商因为其歌曲流露出摄人心魄的绝望情绪，对任何听者无益处而拒绝出版。几经周折此歌终于在布达佩斯得以发行，并在两三年内成为最畅销的歌曲。
歌中描述了一位不幸的男子无法将其所爱的人重新召回身边，他在一个郁闷的星期天频频冒出徇情自杀的绝望念头，而这个念头伴随着对起爱人极度的思念而难以排遣。
多年来，一些难以置信的报道和传闻给此歌披上了极度神秘的色彩。从最初的布达佩斯，到英国的BBC，很多电台将其列为禁歌。
此歌在1936年左右传到了美国。它的第一个英语版本是由爵士艺术家Paul Roberson于1940年录制。1941年8月7日，黑人女歌手Billie Holiday用其重新演绎，使之成为全美家喻户晓的热门歌曲。Billie Holiday灌制的唱片极大推动了此歌在全世界范围内的传播。许多通俗乐队和歌手常在演出时将此曲作为保留曲目。不计其数的艺人和乐队翻唱过这首曲子。最近十年来该曲仍旧被不断地翻唱，并且经常出现在一些爵士乐队的节目单中。
